hopefully people got a lot of yard work done. spent the whole day picking weeds. today is going to be a little bit different. we have a lot more clouds and even a better chance for showers. there are light sprinkles out there. they already crossed south of baltimore. there's more up into southern pennsylvania. so it's just showing that it's going to be a little more unsettled today. i think for baltimore, our best chance is to see more showers will be in afternoon. if you have outdoor plans i would start off the day thinking you could be outdoors. it's the evening hours that we may see more showers. 54 at the airport. high temperature today just as cool, in the low 70s. again, that chance for showers starting late in the afternoon towards the evening hours. we'll talk about what comes up in the seven day which includes more rain. stay tuned. our big story.

once again the orioles. it was a little closer last night, but they once again take down the red sox. >> right. how about them o's. manny machado turns a double play to get the o's out of the inning. then a few innings later the 19-year-old breaks a 3-3 tie with his seventh home run of the year. that's where the score would stay. tying them for first in the the american league east with the yankees. pete gilbert will have more on that but first we take a look at the legend honored before last night's game that got o's fans on their feet. >> number 5 was the sixth and final orioles icon to be a permanent fixture in camden yards in 2012. the 75-year-old and 16-time gold glove winning third base man had been battling health issues this year. but on saturday night, he looked good and felt great about the honor. >> and i just want to say to all

you fans here, i don't like to call you fans. i like to call you friends. >> later, the 1970 world series mvp hopped into a convertible and joined his fellow orioles legends for an on field speech that touched upon his humble baseball beginnings in baltimore, right after high school. >> when i signed with the orioles, i took my $4,000. that was my salary. came to baltimore. my first plane ride. ended up in pennsylvania. i signed. i signed with the orioles, mainly because i thought it was the quickest way to the major leagues. >> and this special night for fans stayed that way when the orioles beat the red sox and moved into a first place tie in the al east with the yankees. >> how are you feeling right now? >> ecstatic, man. like the old days back at orioles stadium. the old bird's back.

o's are back. brooks, my man, he's back. i love it! >> and why not, let's go for the sweep on sunday? w bal 11 news. the man's family and friends laid him to rest. the funeral for 46-year-old anthony anderson was held at the march funeral home yesterday. anderson died more than a week ago while being arrested for drug possession on east middle street. his family said police assaulted him, but police will only say the circumstances of the case remain under investigation. anderson's death highlights on going issues of police brutality in the city, they say. >> we're tired of the double standards where citizens, if they commit crimes, quite frankly, they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. unfortunately, it appears the law doesn't apply to police

officers. we want there to be justice across the board. we want justice for the family of anthony anderson. >> city police say the two officers involved are suspended with pay while homicide investigators investigate his death. baltimore city police filed charges against a man after a three month murder investigation. police arrested 19-year-old arthur holt in connection with a shooting that happened back in june on west pratt street. tayvon wellchel was found dead with several gun shot wounds to his body. holt faces charges including first and second degree murder. in commitment 2012 news this morning, several groups canvas a baltimore neighborhood in support of the dream act. it's the controversial ballot question that, if approved, would give in state tuition to undocumented immigrants. those immigrants must attend a maryland high school for at least three years and prove that they or their parents pay state taxes. members of grass roots

organizations went door to door to reach out to voters. >> in the long run, this will benefit you, too, because our economy depends on having more college graduates and your social security is ultimately gonna depend on whether these kids are successful. so we all have a vested interest in seeing these kids do well. >> the dream act was passed by the general assembly last year. opponents say the law is unfair to citizens and will be a financial burden on the state. they collected more than 100,000 petition signatures to force the issue on this november's ballot well, the big ticket on the ballot remains the presidential race. this weekend the hopefuls slugged it out as the candidates took a breather. both mitt romney and president obama released taped messages as they prepared for their first debate coming up in just three days. brian moore has the latest. >> days before the presidential debate, mitt romney is hammering the president on foreign policy.

>> when president obama was asked about the recent disruption and chaos in the middle east, he said these were merely bumps in the road. bumps in the road also describe something the romney campaign has been unable to avoid in recent weeks. distractions and discouraging poll numbers are upstaging the republican president. >> look what president obama did on the budget. nothing. except borrow and spend. >> when they talk about culture dependency, about american decline, i can honestly say to you, i don't recognize the country they're talking about. >> when vice president biden was fighting for votes in florida, the president was calling on congress to help homeowners. even as he defended his campaign's weak spot. >> so we're moving in the right direction, but we're not there yet. >> a point up for debate as the presidential candidates get ready for their first showdown on wednesday. brian moore, wbal tv 11 news. >> speaking of that debate crews in denver spent most of saturday

good morning. a few light sprinkles happening. we see a few tracking to the eastern shore. those are heading towards ocean city. now behind that, just have to watch out for some light sprinkles that will probably touch the northern tier of carroll county. most is missing the baltimore metro area right now. that's going to change as we get into the afternoon. let's talk about the temperatures right now. little cool, as you step outdoors. very typical for this time of year. 54 bwi thurgood marshall. 61 downtown. randalls town right now 53. the forecast for today, high temperatures will be on the cool side. again, very typical for this time of year. highs around 72 for baltimore. 73 southern maryland.

low 70s across the eastern shore. highs only in the 60s. that's where you're going to encounter a lot more clouds. the mountains have a 60% chance for showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. in southern pennsylvania, 40% chance. we'll see the showers start to my great towards baltimore later this afternoon and evening hours. if you plan to be out on the bay, that's what you have to worry about later on in the day. mix of clouds and sun. variable winds around five knots. we are expecting waves. 7:51 in the evening hours. that is at port mchenry. try to time out some of this rain. notice how it starts to migrate out into the west. carroll county will be the first tot see the rain any time after 4 p.m. then starts to head down towards baltimore. few showers could be around until the late evening hours. then we clear out tonight. it's going to be another mostly clear night.

little more sunshine by tomorrow morning. but that chance for showers early in the evening, temperatures do drop down mostly in the 50s as you get out into the western suburbs, they could be in the upper 40s tonight. current weather pattern is showing that stubborn front is still sitting off shore. we trail it back into texas. that's our next storm system that we do have to watch out for. right now we're just gonna get at least grazed by this next batch of showers this afternoon. but that trailing front brings some very heavy rain back into the east as we get into tuesday. that takes us to our seven day forecast. just a few showers this afternoon. it will be mostly dry monday, increasing clouds into the night. high temperature tomorrow at 73. 75 on tuesday. that's your best chance for rain with that next storm system moving in. starts to clear out wednesday. we should start to warm up in the middle half of the week. sunshine by thursday. high 78. well, authorities in tennessee issue an amber alert for two children thought dead in a home fire. that home burned last sunday. at first 9-year-old chloe and

her half brother 7-year-old gage daniel were presumed dead in the fire. the children were living with their grandparents in shelbyville tennessee. as the week went on, investigators found the remains of the grandparents but no sign of the children. >> they feel like they don't have solid evidence right now to assume that these children were in the fire. >> police are following leads, but there are no persons of interests so far in this case. the fire marshal has no information ton cause of the fire. in an 11 news update, more homes in louisiana were damaged by hurricane ivan than originally thought. state officials now say 59,000 homes in southeast louisiana alone suffered damage from ivan. after the storm made landfall at the end of august. that's four times the original estimate. most of the damage came from flood as fema conducted door to door inspections of 120,000 homes after residents registered for federal aid. work on the busiest freeway

in the country was unexpectedly halted yesterday after a pillar fell on to a new part of the bridge being reconstructed. work ton mulholland bridge overpass is part of this weekend's carmageddon 2 shutdown in l.a. until the pillar fell, work had been running smoothly. no one was injured when that pillar fell. officials say the old part of the bridge was supposed to fall, just not on to the new part. >> that's what everyone wants to hear, more delays, right? recovering after surgery can take a while. now doctors have come up with a plan that could make it easier and maybe even more fun. that's in our medical alert. is america too fat to fight? up next the department of defense weighs in on america's problem with obesity. can eating chocolate make you smarter? better than -- fat and dumb

>> carroll county moved a step closer to making english its official language. the county commission passed an ordinance by a slim vote. >> welcome to carroll county. feel right at home and feel free to speak english. that appears to be the message coming from the members of the county commission. they want to amend an ordinance to make english the official language. it's a proposal backed by the commissioner haven schumacher. >> it's not anything radical. it just adopts the english language as the official language for purposes of carroll county government. that's it in a nut shell. >> one section makes it necessary that the role of english as the common language of carroll county is preserved and enhanced. the proposal has already become a hot topic on main street. >> i say first of all it's a waste of taxpayer's money and time.

question that, if approved, would give in state tuition to undocumented immigrants. >> we have a truly inspirational story about a 19-year-old who beat the odds and survived cancer. last week, he beat the odds again to become maryland's newest megamillions winner. wait until you hear what he's doing with the money. >> nicholas ruth seems like your average 19-year-old hoping to become a police officer. but as of monday, he's $250,000 richer. he bought a lottery ticket that made him a second tier winner in the maryland lottery's megamillions game. >> i looked over the ticket multiple times before it even clicked that all the numbers matched except for one. i was so speechless, my mom was wondering what was going on because i just kept trying to speak and i couldn't. so i ran over an gave her the ticket. i was jumping up and dourng told her i won the lottery. >> after taxes he'll get just over $165,000.

nicholas said he plans to use some of the money to pay off his car, save to buy a home. but he also plans to donate it. nicholas was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005. he's been cancer-free for four years now and wants to give back. >> as a cancer survivor, i can't really pay back what people have done for me in my past. they've really helped me out a lot. i would like to gifb back in the community that gave to me. show them my gratitude. hopefully help someone else just like someone helped me. >> on his list with the leukemia and lymphoma society and the make a wish foundation. nicholas overcame the odds to beat cancer. now he's beat the odds 3.5 million to 1. >> if they win, we're thrilled. nick is exceptional. he's a nice young man. he's a hard worker. he's a cancer survivor willing to give back. we're thrilled that he won. >> people keep saying that i

start off this sunday. a few other areas dealing with some light sprinkles. had a few showers track south of baltimore early on. those are now heading towards the eastern shore. just a few sprinkles mainly near fruitland. these could hold together and make their way towards ocean city. but they're very light in general. few other showers just starting to move toward hagers town. most should stay up to our north. better chances for rain coming in this afternoon. we'll talk about that. i do want to show you temperatures around the metro area. typical for this time of year. 55 pikesville. bwi thurgood marshall at 54. always one of the warmer spots currently 61 degrees. forecast for today. highs around baltimore, near 72. ocean city also near 72. it is going to be cooler both in southern pennsylvania and the mountains where highs are only near 67. that's because they'll see a lot

more clouds during the day. chance for storms and showers early on. they have about a 60% chance for rain. southern pennsylvania. more in the range of 40% and most of that does come in towards the early afternoon. we'll be tracking those showers as they make their way down towards baltimore later this afternoon and into the evening hours. for the rest of the day, you'll have to watch for showers later on. early on the winds will be variable, around five knots. waves one foot or next. the next high tide 7:13 at for the mchenry. it's the later half of the day that we have the best chance of showers. even like that they're likely to be scattered. not everyone will get them. just a few of you with some showers out there later this afternoon. set to go in to carroll county by 4:00. then closer to sixth and beyond. those could last until about 10 p.m. then we dry out overnight. here's the forecast for tonight. showers early on, then clearing skies late. the sun sets at 6:50 this

evening. temperatures do drop down into the 50s overnight. far western and northern areas of the metro area likely to be in the 40s. that's even the case near the pennsylvania line. here's what's happening. a stationary front, same one that moved through last week, still hanging off the coast. what's back behind it could trigger a few showers today. then we watch the tail end of this front as it stretches back into texas. this is what's producing heavy rainfall along the gulf coast. this whole storm will migrate up into the east. that's when we have our best rain chances. today, it's only a 30% chance into the afternoon and evening. partly sunny. 75 tuesday. that again is your best chance to see rain. 60% chance at this point at all times of the day. we warm up to near 80 degrees.

in this morning's education, students at south university are stirring up some controversy with a suggestion of forming a white student union. the idea has grabbed national attention and it's raising questions about racially equality. students met at a student government hearing. organizers with the white student union said it would be an advocacy group to provide a safe haven for white students who have been discriminated against and a source of pride for white students nap all told their peers the group would be open to anyone regardless of their race as long as they support the union's mission. >> most of controversy is being generated by people that i they are scared that white students are finally shaking this trend and being proud of who they are and encouraging pride in their culture. >> what is white history? what is white culture? because, like i said, if you look back over history, nothing positive has come out of white history or white culture because you've done nothing good. so when i see the white student

union, i'm not excited. i feel like this is for all the wrong reasons. >> organizers behind the proposal have fulfilled all the requirements to become a student group with the exception of having a faculty adviser. they're hoping to resolve that issue by the end of next month. another student group is fighting the tension with love. the group said it's trying to do its part to keep the peace. tim tooten takes a closer look. >> at freedom square in the middle of the campus, students turn to paint soaked sponges to try to blot out hate. >> we're writing hate words and we're giving people the opportunity to throw pain on it so it's kind of like a visual stamping out of hate. >> nice one. >> what do you think of this?

>> i think it's a good thing. not everybody has this kind of thing. it's something to let your anger out on. you can throw a sponge at the wall. >> the student group started a year ago. it was before concerns were raised on campus over chalk messages written about western civilization. the student who claimed that he was behind the writings defended the action and has recently pushed for a white student union. the group said this is the kind of behavior it is trying to change. >> i think it's like more of a positive way to handle it. because i remember when the chalkings happened and a lot of students were offended. i never saw them but i heard what they had written. i'm like, i want to see the paint. >> it is also geared towards bullying. >> i'm really an advocate of not bullying, so i wanted to show my feelings about it. i got it out.

on and off the campus. >> the smart phones now a days can do anything. >> true. google is using its online maps program to provide users with under water tours, no swimming required by using google map street view service, viewers can navigate around the world's coral reefs. it provides images of the world under the sea courtesy of the catlin sea survey a project studying the health of the world's reef. google in the past has offered under water views but previously only showed the sea floor. as if california drivers didn't have enough to worry about, they could soon see google's driverless cars. no driver behind the wheel. california's governor signed a bill making the car street legal, the pedals, steering and google's self-driving cars are guided by cameras, sensors and gps. it's not a free pass to nap. passengers still need to pay attention in case a human needs

mercury shows up on a lot of best and worst lists. baltimore was the toast of the town last sunday. in the midst of a lot of awards presented at the 64th annual primetime emmys one of the biggest winners was baltimore. it was a big night for baltimore productions, stars, even a jewelry designer. julie bowen took home another emmy as best supporting actress for her role in modern family. her introduction mentioned her baltimore childhood where her love of acting began with her sister. one of the strongest sweeps of the night the baltimore based docu drama won four awards for acting, writing and direction. in the movie an miniseries competition. the award for best actress in comedy went to julia louis dryfuss which is filmed in baltimore. she thanked her crew in

baltimore and will return for her work on a second season for the now emmy award winning show. even the gift bags had a taste of baltimore with jewelry from a local designer that went to the stars in the celebrity gift lounge. there was enough to get around.

the orioles. it was a little closer last night, but they once again took down the boston red sox. >> top of the fourth inning, manny machado turns a double play to get the o's out of the inning. then the 20-year-old breaks a 3-3 tie with his seventh home run of the year. that's where the score would stay. o's win 4-3 tying them for first in the the al east with the yankees. pete gilbert's going to have more later in sports. first we take a look at the legend honored before last night's game that got o fans everywhere on its feet. >> number five was the sixth and final orioles icon to be a permanent fixture in legends park at camden yards in 2012. the 75-year-old and 16 time gold glove winning third base man have been battling health issues this year. but on saturday night, he looked good and felt great about the honor. >> i just want to say to all you

o's are back. brooks my man came back. i love it. >> to quote the 1989 orioles, why not. let's go for the sweep on sunday. >> in other news, baltimore police continue their investigation into what caused a man to die after being taken into police custody. the man's family and friends laid him to rest. the funeral for 46-year-old anthony anderson was held at the march funeral home on north avenue yesterday. he died after being arrested for drug possession. his family said police assaulted him. police would only say the circumstances remain under investigation. supporters anderson's death highlight issues of police brutality in the city. >> we're tired of the double standard, where citizens, if they commit crimes, quite frankly, then they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. it appears as if the law doesn't

apply to police officers. we want there to be justice across the board. >> city police say two officers involved are suspended with pay while homicide detectives investigate anderson's death. in an 11 news update city police file charges against man after a three month murder investigation. police arrested 19-year-old arthur holt in connection with the shooting that happened back in june in the 2100 block of west pratt street. 19-year-old tayvon wellchal was found dead with several gun shot wounds to his body. holt faces charges including first and second degree murder. in our commitment 2012 news this morning, several groups canvas the baltimore neighborhood in the support the dream act. it's that controversial ballot question that f approved, would give instate tuition to undocumented immigrants. those immigrants must attend a maryland high school for at least three years and prove they or their parents pay state taxes.

the grass roots organizations in favor of the act went door to door to reach out to voters. >> in the long run, this law will benefit you, too. our economy depends on having more college graduates and your social security is ultimately going to depend on whether these kids are successful. so we all have a vested interest in seeing these kids do well. >> the dream act was passed by the general assembly last year. opponents say the law is unfair to citizens and will be a financial burden on the state. they collected more than 100,000 pe tig signatures to force the issue on this november ballot. well, the big ticket on this november's ballot, however, remains the presidential race. this weekend the vice presidential hopefuls slugged it out as the presidential candidates take a breather. >> both mitt romney and the president released tape messages as they prepared for their first debate coming up in just three days. brian moore has the latest from the campaign trail. >> days before the first presidential debate, mitt romney is hammering the president on

>> good morning. we're starting you off with a live look outdoors. 52 degrees at bwi thurgood marshall. the humidity right now 89%. lot of the city lights still on right now. the sun coming up within the hour. notice how it's coming up a lot later this time of year. sun sets earlier as well. a lot more darkness every day. that's contributing to some of the cool temperatures. we're seeing a few showers before spun rise. light sprinkles starting to move through frederick county and maybe starting to pop up as we get through the next hour or so. something to watch out for in a northern part of the metro area north of baltimore county. may see some light sprinkles within the next hour or so. those should fall apart. look at the rain temperatures outside of the city. 50 in westminster.

50 frederick. 51 in hagers town. 40s as you head into the western part of maryland. 43 oakland. it's a cooler start to the day up in the mountains. they are going to be cooler into the afternoon. that's aided by all the cloud cover which keeps them cooler as well. high temperature 67 in much of the mountains. better chance for showers at any point today. even southern pennsylvania has about 40% chance for showers today. even into the early afternoon. we're gonna watch that the showers migrate from the west to east later today. baltimore does have a chance at those, but it happens a lot later. mostly towards the late hours. ocean city sunny. 72 for the high. southern maryland mostly sunny as well. 73 for the high temperature there. let's put the future cast in motion and time out this rain chance. does start to creep toward carl county about 4 p.m. it's going to take longer to get to baltimore. mainly after 6 p.m. through about 10 p.m.

that's the best chance to see showers. but they will be very scattered. so not everyone is even going to see them. that is your forecast for today. chance for showers as we get into tonight, showers into the evening hours. as we drop down into the 50s and upper 40s. here's what is happening. that stationary front, that pesky one that was affecting the area the last couple of days, it's still sitting off shore. it drags back into texas. this is the next storm system we do have to watch out for. clouds coming in off the gulf coast. heavier rain as well. all of the rain will be migrating into the east the next couple of days. that will be the next area of rain we have to watch out for. we're off to 72 today. 73 tomorrow. tomorrow will be mostly dry, but increasing clouds later in the day ahead of that next storm system. pretty good chances for rain. high of 75. we start to dry out wednesday. an elderly woman in portland

maine is lucky to be alive thanks to some good samaritans who risked their own lives to save hers. >> several people jumped into the portland harbor after her car ran a stop sign and plunged into the water. the rescue was all caught on camera. >> this home video shows how quickly passers by work to get 84-year-old urs la stacy as her car sunk into the harbor. police have no idea what was behind the crash, but witnesses say it took just seconds for nixon's car to run a stop sign on indian street and go into the water. >> i looked over. i saw the car. it was coming through the parking lot. looked like it was barrelling pretty fast. and then i saw it go over the edge and water come up. that scared me. >> but he was among those who went straight into the water. others called 911. >> it was nerve wracking. kind of chaotic in trying to figure it out.

trying to call for help. >> police happen to be on patrol next door. firefighters were training in ocean gateway. they got to the water. this was a true team effort. you can see even as he approaches the car an unidentified woman completely pulled nixon out. >> without the efforts of the bystanders, it might have been a completely different outcome. >> paramedics used rows to pull her out of the water. many who jumped in, had to be treated for hypo thermia. everyone was feeling lucky. >> everybody did a good job helping out. >> nixon is badly hurt but in stable condition. thanks to a little bit of luck and a lot of caring witnesses. >> that was terrifying. >> you're telling me. >> that was carolina cornish reporting. coming up 15% used to be the standard for a waiter.

the other seasons. >> i prefer spring. >> same, similar concept there except you're coming out of winter. it definitely feels like fall. a few clouds in the sky. dew point temperature near 49. as we get into the afternoon, you'll see a mix of sun and clouds and chance for scattered showers late in the day towards the evening hours. most of you may actually not see showers because they're going to be fairly scattered in nature. expecting those to be out and around lear today with high temperatures from 70 to 74. better rain chances in the seven day. we'll talk about that when we come back. >> thanks, ava. now for a look at our top stories. the o's back in place in the al east. they are tied with the yankees. manny machado led the charge against the red sox driving in the first run in the game and then breaking a tie in the seventh with a home run. the o's go on to win 4-3 with their final home game of the regular season later tonight.

you can see just on the eastern horizon, the sun is starting to creep up. it will officially arrive just before 7:00 this morning. so if you want to step outdoors, now would be a good time to see that sun rise out there. few clouds in the sky right now arch few sprinkles as well especially if you look off to the west. notice how they're tracking north of hagers town. maybe we get something popping up in northern frederick, northern carroll county. that's about it. that should be within the next two hours. then basically this falls apart. we'll be tracking better rain chances as we get into the afternoon. temperatures across the state. little cooler as we get towards the west. 50 westminster. dropping into the 40s in hancock, frostburg and oakland. both sitting at 43 degrees right now. a chilly start to the day. feels very much like the fall season. makes sense. this is the last day of september. we're starting to get into october. by tomorrow. 72 for the high today in baltimore. that's your forecast.

much of the same as you head into the southern part of the state. also along the eastern shore. now, it is going to be cooler in southern pennsylvania in the mountains. there's a lot more clouds today and they have a better chance for showers. mountains could see showers, maybe even some thunderstorms into the afternoon. southern pennsylvania about 40% chance of showers. slightly less chance as you get down into baltimore. these rain chances come in much later into the day. we can kind of time this out. showers start to speckle the western part of the state later today. then they start to move toward carroll county past 4 p.m. baltimore will take a little bit longer so the showers make your way your way. after 6 p.m. and beyond in which case could see a few scattered showers. scattered being the key word there. not everyone is going to get wet. temperatures drop down into the 50s and the upper 40s in the western suburbs. showers still possible throughout the evening hours. they'll have clearing skies late into the night. here's what we're watching for as we go into the seven day. that front that bothered us at

>> impossible to single out a homeless student in a crowded hallway. baltimore county school officials say there's a reason why. >> i think for years people thought about homeless people as being the person standing ton street corner. >> that's because so many of these students are staying in shelters with relatives or in local motels. even so, those who run the school system's wholeness education office say they're doing their best to reach them. >> we want to make sure they have support. we provide -- we have tutoring programs to provide extra educational support for them in the homeless shelter. we've just begun to move that program out into the schools for some of the homeless schools. >> but the homeless student population increased 600% in just 314 in 2001 to 1,914 last school year. >> homeless children are being identified increasingly and given services. >> thank you for calling. how can i help you?

robinson. they unveiled his statue. and then brooks came out to throw out the first pitch. he's 75. doesn't quite have the arm he once did, but he enjoyed what he saw from the kid playing third these days against the red sox. manny machado from baltimore brings in a run. mark reynolds out at third. orioles taking a 1-0 lead. the hot corner played so well here in the fourth. machado, beautiful hand. throws a strike to second. 5-4-3 double play. then machado at the plate with the game tied at 7. he's only 20. goodness gracious what me might do in the future. amazing what he's doing right now. that proved to be the game winner 4-3 as the orioles improve to 91-57, grab a share of first place on the night they bring past and present together. something special indeed here at camden yards. >> we had a lot of pressure on

us to win with brooks here. appropriate that third base man made a couple nice plays. just such -- i can talk about mr. robinson all day long. >> just try to be me. just try to catch the ball at first ppt but to do it on this night feels great, felt great. glad we came up with the win. >> a very special night here at camden yards. now, on sunday if the orioles win and the angels lose one of their two games, they have to play a double header. if they lose one of their two games the orioles will have clinched a first season berth for the first time since 1997. not a bad way to round out the season. looks like there will be post season games here as well. i'm pete gilbert. have a great day. a 19-year-old who beat the odds and survivored cancer beat them again.

>> he's the newest megamillions winner. wait until you hear what he plans to do with the money. >> nicholas ruth seems like your average 19-year-old hoping to become a police officer. but as of monday, he's $250,000 richer. he bought a lottery ticket that made him a second tier winner in the maryland lottery megamillions game. >> i looked over at the ticket. before it even clicked that the numbers matched except for one. i was so speechless my mom was wondering what was going on i just kept trying to speak when i couldn't. i ran over and gave her the ticket. >> after taxes, he'll get just over $165,000. nicholas said he plans to use some of the money to pay off his car, save to buy a home. he all plans to donate it. nicholas was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005. he's been cancer free for four years now and wants to get back. >> as a cancer survivor, i can't really pay back what people have

done for me. they've really helped me out a lot. i would like to give back to the community, show them my gratitude and hopefully help someone else. just like they help med. >> on his list are the leukemia and lymphoma society and the make a wish foundation which sent him on a cruise. nicholas overcame the odds to beat cancer, and now he's beat the odds 3 1/2 million to 1 to win the lottery. >> anyone who plays the maryland lottery, if they win, we're thrilled. nick is exceptional. he's a hard worker. and he's a cancer survivor willing to give back. we're thrilled that he won. >> people keep saying that i deserve it and what i went through, but there's people far off worse than what i went to that could use the money more than me. i'm just glad i can help them out in a big way. >> wbal tv 11 news. >> cool kid. i'm so excited for him. that's awesome.

baltimore shows up in a lot of best and worst lists, but the city was the toast of the town last sunday. in a good way. in the midst of a lot of awards presented at the 64th annual primetime emmys one of the biggest winners was baltimore on multiple fronts. it was a big night for baltimore productions, stars, and even a jewelry designer. julie bowen took home another emmy as best supporting actress for her role in "modern family." he introduction mentioned her baltimore childhood, where her love of acting began in her back yard with her sisters np one of the strongest sweeps of the night the docu drama "game change" won four awards for acting, writing and direction in the movie and miniseries competition. the award for best actress in comedy went to julia lou wi

dryfess. she thanked her crew in baltimore and will return next month for work on a second season for the now emmy award winning show. even the gift bags had taste of baltimore, with jewelry from a local designer that went to the stars in the celebrity gift lounge. there was definitely enough of the charm city to go around.

they tuned. >> a big story this morning once again. orioles, it was closer last night but they once again took down the red sox. >> top of the fourth, manny machado turns a double play to get the o's out of the inning. then the 20-year-old breaks a tie with his seventh home run of the year. that's where the score would stay. the o's win, tying them for first place in the al east with the yankees. o's fans had something extra to celebrate. >> brooks robinson. he was the sixth and final orioles icon to be a permanent fixture in camden parks in 201. the 75-year-old and 16 time gold glove winning third base man had been battling health issues this

year. but on saturday night he looked good and felt great about the honor. >> i just want to say to all you fans here, i don't like to call you fans. i like to call you friends. >> later in 197 0e world series mvp hopped into a convertible and joined his fellow orioles legends for an on field speech that touched upon his humble baseball beginnings in baltimore right after high school. >> when i signed with the orioles, i took my $4,000. that was my salary. came to baltimore. my first plane ride. ended up in pennsylvania. i signed with the orioles mainly because i thought it was the quickest way to the major leagues. >> this special night for fans stayed that way when the orioles beat the red sox and moved into a first place tie in the al east with the yankees. >> that's great. beat the evil empire! >> how are you feeling right

now? >> ecstatic. it's unbelievable. like the old days back in orioles stadium fp old bird's back. o's are back. brooks, my man, he's back. i love it. >> to quote the 1989 orioles, why not? let's go for the sweep on sunday. wlal tv 11 news. in other news, baltimore city police continue their investigation into what cause manned to die after being taken into police custody. the man's family and friends laid him to rest. the funeral for 46-year-old anthony anderson wu held at the march funeral home on north avenue yesterday. anderson died while being arrested for drug possession on east middle street. his family said police assaulted him. police will only say that the circumstances of the case remain under investigation. supporters say anderson's death highlights what they call an on going issue of police brutality in the city. >> we're tired of the double standard where citizens, if they commit crimes, quite frankly,

then they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. just appears as though the law doesn't apply to police officers. we want there to be justice across the board. we want justice for the family of anthony anderson. >> the two officers involved are suspended with pay while homicide deteb tifshs investigate anderson's death. in an 11 news update baltimore city police filed charges against a man after a three month murder investigation. police arrested 19-year-old ar thour holt in connection with a shooting that happened back in june in the 2100 truck of west pratt street. the 19-year-old was found dead with several gun shot wounds to his body. holt faces charges including first and second degree murder. in commitment 2012 news this morning, several groups canvassed the baltimore neighborhood in support of the dream act. that's that controversial ballot question that, if approved, would give in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants.

those ip grants must attend a maryland high school for three years and prove they or their parents pay state taxes. members in favor of the act went door to door to reach out to voters. >> in the long run, this law will benefit you, too, because our economy depends on having more college graduates and your social security is ultimately gonna depend on whether these kids are successful. so we all have a vested interest in seeing these kids do well. >> the dream act was passed by the general assembly last year. opponents say the law is unfair to citizens and will be a financial burden on the state. they collected more than 100,000 petition signatures to force the issue on this november's ballot. a big ticket on this's ballot, however, remains the presidential race. this weekend the vice presidential hopefuls slugged it out as the presidential candidates take a breather. >> both mitt romney and president obama released taped messages as they prepare for their first debate coming up in

three days. >> days before the presidential debate, mitt romney is hammering the president on foreign policy. >> when president obama was asked about the recent disruption and chaos and vie len in the middle east, he said that these were merely bumps in the road. >> thanks. >> bumps in the road also describe something the romney campaign has been unable to avoid in recent weeks. costly distractions and discouraging poll numbers are up staging the republican message. >> look at what president obama did on the budget. nothing. except borrow and spend. >> when they talk about the culture dependency, about american decline, i can honestly say to you, i don't recognize the country they're talking about. >> while vice president biden was fighting for votes in florida, the president was calling on congress to help homeowners. even as he defended his campaign's weak spot. >> so we're moving in the right direction, but we're not there yet. >> a point up for debate as the presidential candidates get ready for their first showdown

>> good morning. starting you off with a live view of ocean city. that's from the grand hotel and spa. isn't it beautiful. sun rise reflecting off the water. not too many people out on the beach. it is chilly. 50 in ocean city. 52 baltimore's airport with the humidity 86%. winds are mostly calm. you want to see the sun rise you still have it going on. sun came up just before 7:00 this morning. few light sprinkles happened early, mainly across the lower eastern shore. you look at the radar now. all is pretty much just a shower or so. everyone el is enjoying not only dry conditions but also a little bit of sunshine as we continue sun rise. that's going to change later

today. more clouds building. let's look at the temperatures. we have 49 degrees in college park. frederick. 50. drops off into the 40s as you head into western maryland. we're expecting high temperatures in baltimore around 72 degrees today. lot of clouds building in later today. that's where we have a chance of showers in baltimore. the high 67. the mountains also cooler with showers possible at any time. maybe even some thunder towards the afternoon. showers come in from the west to the east. southern maryland and the eastern shore staying mostly dry today. we're going to try to time out this rain. better chances coming in towards 4 p.m. showers come west to east so they're gonna take a little bit longer to get to baltimore mostly getting to the area after 5 p.m. that's a chance for showers

around baltimore. they'll slowly migrate around the eastern shore and will clear out as we get into the overnight hours. we clear out as we drop down to the 50s and 40s for the overnight lows. here's what's happening. we still have what's left over of that storm system that affected us at the end of the week. the actual front is off shore. in the upper atmosphere there's stit instability. that's what could bring the scattered showers lear today. then front drags down into texas as a new storm system is forming. this one producing a lot of rain right now both in texas and louisiana. all this is going to be heading into the east into the next couple of days. that takes us to the seven day forecast. scattered showers today, this afternoon, mostly after 5 p.m. for baltimore. not everyone is going to see them. partly sunny tomorrow. 75 tuesday. that is your best chance for rain. it could happen at any point in the day. >> authorities in tennessee issued an amber alert for two

children after their home burned down. chloe and her half brother gage were presumed dead in the fire. the children were living with their grandparents in shelbyville tennessee when their home burned to the ground. investigators found remains of the grandparents but no sign of the children. >> they feel like they don't have solid evidence to assume that these children were in the fire. >> police say they are following leads but there are no persons of interest in the case. fire marshal has no information on the cause of the fire. in an 11 news update more homes in louisiana were damaged by hurricane isaac than originally thought. state officials now say 59,000 homes in the southeast part of the state alone suffered damage from isaac after the storm made landfall at the end of august. that's four times the original estimate. most of the damage came from flooding. the federal emergency management agency conducted door to door inspections of more than 120,000 homes after residents registered

for federal aid. work on the busiest freeway in the country was unexpectedly halted yesterday after a pillar fell on to a new part of the bridge being reconstructed. work on the mulholland bridge overpass is part of this weekend's carmageddon 2 shutdown in l.a. until the pillar fell, work had been going smoothly and on time on the 405. no one was hurt when the pillar fell. officials say the old part of the bridge was supposed to fall. just not ton new part of the bridge. >> wonder what that's gonna mean for a delay now. >> no kidding. there's still plenty of news ahead. we're going to be talking about birthday parties for your kids. but first at medical problem we're seeing more and more of. younger people suffering from heart attacks. some signs to watch out for and how to prevent h

>> joined by dr. ronald share. thank you very much for coming in. >> pleasure. >> we've been seeing so many more heart attacks among young people. recent celebrities. >> sure. >> what's going on? >> well, it's our american lifestyle. we super size. we smoke. we text. we don't exercise so our lifestyle is conducive to heart disease. obesity is rampant. die beatties is much more common. we're seeing it in younger and younger people. that leads to more early heart disease. >> despite the fact that in the last ten years or so there's been a lot of talk about exercise and eating better and -- no? >> i think there's two different worlds. there's the world of people who are healthy and eat well. then there's a large segment that don't eat welsh don't exercise, smoke.

you know. obesity is amazingly common today. it's even in young kids. consequently you see it earlier and earlier. and the good thing is prevention is possible. most of it's avoidable. >> let's talk about some of the symptoms for those who may be watching and they really should pay attention. >> sure. it's a variety of things. it can be pain. it can be pressure. it can be numbness, burning, shortness of breath, sweatiness, nausea. a variety of things. it's not always classical. it's just something that's different, not what you felt before. >> so just pay attention to your body. >> correct. your body tells you when you're doing poorly. if you're not sure call or go to the emergency room. because time is important. the longer you wait, the more damage, the more risk. >> okay.

risk factors that there are some that cannot -- well, that cannot be changed. >> correct. genetics cannot be. but a lot of genetics or people think they have it are really not. because their family members smoked. the things that can be changed. you know, diet, exercise, blood pressure can be treated. so can smoking, of course. un. controlled diabetes is a huge contributor. >> correct. a lot of that in our society is an obesity diet, lack of exercise. >> all right. start making some changes. and just you said in order to help prevent this, just knowing your numbers? i think quit smoking is on every list. >> i think it's looking early, younger. identifying disease or early. we see a lot of heart disease, really begins in many people prior to age 20. so this idea of waiting until

you're 30 and 40 to look is late. >> wow. all those bad eating habits have usually caught up to you by the time you're 20? young people would say, i can eat anything. i can have a milk shake every day. i work out. i play sports. >> the answer is no. i mean, you know, again, we know that in many people it starts young. so, you know, screen your kids even. know what your cholesterol level is. know what your blood pressure is, your sugars, etc. once you have a heart attack there's a limited amount that you can do, you know, prevent shun. that is really, you know, the key. >> okay, dr. share, thank you very much for coming in. >> thanks again. >> don't go away. when we come back, we're gonna go back the midevil times. how to spoil your knight or princess on their special day. first some events going on around town. >> thank you. >> thank you.

or you have a child that has friends. you want to have both. a princess tea party is nice. what can i do for a boy? a knight. >> definitely. >> it's a pinyata. >> yes. i made this out of a balloon. paper mache, old school. instead of using the flour and water, i used white glue mixed half and half with water. and then -- >> that was it. >> then i used flyers, junk mail. put it around the balloon. then used tissue paper to finish it and then used card board to make this cute little fin. this is tissue, paper towel rolls. this is modelled after the sky lander. >> you can hang him and beat him and get the candy. >> what i did with this, the dragon is guarding the treasure. this is chocolate candy. i just put coins.

i just found a container that i had already and just spray painted some paper to give it the flowing gold look. >> that's a great idea. a milk jug. >> you can see it was a milk jug. this is just bottle caps. this didn't cost very much. this, i got some packing materials. i thought, this kind of looks like cave men. i made these cute little bags. very inexpensive. this i really like. i got this inexpensive blower for like a dollar. i turn it into a fire breathing dragon. >> that's awesome. how did you do that? >> it's really interesting. once i glued it on here, it still curled. i was really impressed by that. >> you put your cookies in there. >> this is a castle. i just had a lit box. these are paper towel rolls.

i cut them hope to make the columns. >> you are good. >> these are pop sickle sticks. now, my cookies, everyone always likes my cookies. >> there's this nice secret. vanilla extract which is amazing. it's a bourbon based vanilla extract. >> thank you for finally telling us what you put in there. >> this is my gift satchel. i took a piece of fabric and a bag. i just put it up like this. then i cinched it. >> did you glue it? >> no. a rubber band. just wrap it around. >> look how pretty this is. look how easy. >> so easy. this is a shoe box for the carriage. i like the wheels because they are from jars of sauce. >> you're kidding me? >> i did the wheels. >> that's great. >> it was really fun. >> we have to wrap up. i hate to do this. >> scrap book and paper.

he's someone who said mitt romney earlier this year was having a tough time connecting with voters. have things changeed? we'll ask why governor romney is behind at this point in key battleground polls. >> you just mentioned he is behind in some key battleground states include hoying hoy. what is the romney campaign not doing so well at at this point? >> well, by their own admission, the campaign's admission, there's a couple of factors. chief among them is that he hasn't really outlined with his presidency would mean. i think that's something that they feel they have to do more. at the same time, he's having to clean up from mistakes that he made. that 47% video really took its toll. if you think about who he was talking about, key parts of the republican coalition. people on medicare, social security. you talk about people who get government assistance who think of themselves as victims. there's a lot that he's had to try to do to combat an image

that he's dealt with throughout. that he's superrich, out of touch with average americans and isn't someone they can trust to turn things around. do you know the poll question, do you understand the concerns of people like me? that's an area where romney has fallen down. he has to spend precious time trying to rehabilitate himself on that question. his team understands that's had a toll. >> wednesday night's going to be extremely important for both candidates in this election. they're going to be focusing on domestic policy issues. what do they need to say that's going to hook the voters? >> well, if you're mitt romney, you're going focus ton president's record. what he planned to do. what he said he could do in terms of turning the economy around. at the same time, be very clear about what the remedy is. the obama play book has been that he needs more time because the economy was in such a bad place that he needs more than just four years. and, two, the republican ideas are old. that they're ineffective.

shifting gears, you're going to have bears. you get the author and illustrator. two little girls, totally different. in this one they're making the rules, the older sister gets to go to camp girl power forever. who would not want to go there? i don't get to go. they're gonna start their own camp, flaming arrow. puts fear in the hearts of parents. this is book nine in the series. so for the 6 to 9-year-old girls, very refreshing. nothing mousey. just resourceful. okay. shiver me timbers. this is douglas florian. he has written so many fantastic poetry books. this is his newest one. exactly what is the most powerful thing about a pirate? and what can make a pirate puke? this is 19 poems. but he illustrates it and he likes it. they're really hilarious. you can go down and meet him. he may drop.

the next one is the town of the bridge, war of 1812 story. everybody knows st. michaels. when you're driving down to the beach. this is a story about that day in history when the british ships start sailing up through the mist. that town was sitting right in their sights. mark nobleman will be there. he wrote a book about the guys who created superman. he's also done batman. mary anne kusimano is there with you're my wonder, the bond between teachers and students. i didn't bring this one. karen leggett is gonna be there. when the people in egypt went and held hands and made a chain around the library to defend it and protect it. amazing story. is that a great thing? that is a great day. come on down to the baltimore book festival. you'll have the time of your lives. >> bring your books to get

starting you off with a live look downtown. beautiful shot right now. not too many clouds yet. currently 59 degrees downtown. 52 at thurgood marshall. a chilly start to the day. it is indeed the last day of september. october begins tomorrow. as we look at the radar, we had a few sprinkles early on. those are all wound down. what we are going to wash out for are more showers. it will come mainly toward the afternoon hours. first let's talk about the temperatures. 50s around the baltimore metro area. as we step out for that, we're expecting temperatures around the 40s. western part of the state. switching over to computer one, we are seeing temperatures right now basically in the 40s. and that is a chilly start to the day. 48 in westminster. we have 49 in hancock.

43 oakland. forecast for today. 72 degrees this afternoon. same case for much of the eastern shore. it is going to be cooler in southern pennsylvania in the mountains. they have a lot more cloud cover today. they'll have a chance for showers maybe a rumble of thunder. chance for showers later in the afternoon. putting it in motion. clouds build in throughout the mountains. throughout the day. later this afternoon after 5 p.m., that's the best chance of moving through baltimore. they're likely to be very scattered. maybe you don't see anything at all. nonetheless, something to watch out for. tonight, best chance for showers will be in the early evening hours including skies late in the night. we drop down into the 50s. western subpeshs will be in the 40s overnight. this is all because of this same pesky storm system. the northern half has moved off shore but there's something

something in the western atmosphere that's causing instability. also this front trails all the way back into texas where a new storm is forming. this one could cause more rain into the next week. just a ever ending storm system. notice all the rain pushing into texas and louisiana. this will be migrating up to the east into the week. today scattered showers by the afternoon. high 72. 73 tomorrow with partly sunny skies. 75 by tuesday with a better chance for rain. then we start to dry out again on wednesday. >> i think our producer just wants to torture me. move over punxatawney phil because there's a new weather expert in town. if you want to know whether we'll have an early winter ask baltimore bill. bill is the world's first weather predicting crab. he was outside of the harbor place mccormack store walking a specially designed plank with two exits. both choice of direction

to a retail outlet. that's what you find in the pet stores. they have a tendency to in breed a lot of their animals. horrendous conditions. they live in cages. they're just bred over and over again every heat cycle. >> that's so sad. that's where she came from? >> that's where she came from. she's a very sweet and lovable. she's a little bit scared sometimes. she has learned very quickly how to walk on a leash and go up and down stairs. she's learning very quickly. smart dog. with puppy mill dogs, we like people to have another dog so that they have a friend, someone they can associate. they relate better with animals than people. >> because they spent so much of their life just around animals. >> it also helps train them. it's really best to have a yard. they do have a tendency to get frightened. they scoot. >> i can imagine after the conditions they grew up in. so she's 6, so she went through that for six years. >> she was bred every heat cycle for five to six years.

sunday. in a good way. in the midst of a lot of awards presented at the 64th annual primetime emmys one of the biggest winners was baltimore on multiple fronts. it was a big night for baltimore productions, stars and even a jewelry designer. baltimore native julie bowen took home another emmy for her role in the comedy "modern family." her introduction mentioned her love of baltimore. in one of the strongest sweeps of the night, the baltimore based docu drama "game change" won four awards in the movie and miniseries competition. the award for best actress in comedy went to julia louis dryfuss. she thanked her crew in baltimore and will return next month for work on a second season for the award winning show. even the gift bags had a taste of baltimore with jewelry from a local designer that went to the stars in the celebrity gift lounge.

there was enough of charm city to go around.
